Still, even though so many people knew that something was happening, no one could predict what would happen. So, the people on the islands near Krakatoa went on with their lives for the summer. After three months of Earth tremors and some smoke escaping from the volcano, Krakatoa finally exploded four times and then collapsed into the sea, much the way Santorini did. The sky was dark for 2 1.2 days because of the amount of ash and debris that was in the atmosphere. The explosion of Krakatoa on August 27, 1883 is thought to be one of the largest volcanic eruptions ever to occur on Earth. It is certainly the largest to happen in the modern era. It was reported to have made a sound that was heard over 2,000 miles away in Australia. The eruption sent shock waves through the water that also created tidal waves anywhere from 50 to 150 feet high. It is estimated that over Lava flow enters Ocean 30,000 people living in coastal communities on the Pacific Ocean were killed in the first day as a result of drowning. |
